If the upper layers of air are warmer than the lower, it is called an inversion. This occurs primarily in the autumn and winter months. It is often cloudy and cool in the valleys, but sunny and mild in the mountains. When you break through the layer of clouds on the way up into the mountains, you feel like “you’re flying above the clouds!”.
